Coahoma Football Faces No. 11 Northwest on the Road
Senatobia, Miss. — Coahoma Community College’s football team will hit the road Thursday to play against No. 11 Northwest Mississippi Community College in a Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference North Division game. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Bobby Franklin Field.
The Tigers enter the game with a 0-5 record overall and 0-2 in division play after a narrow 42-41 loss to Itawamba Community College on Sept. 24. Despite the defeat, Coahoma produced one of its best offensive performances of the season, totaling 516 yards, including 233 rushing and 283 passing yards.
In that game, the Tigers led 14-0 after the first quarter. Running back Prentavis Madison scored twice in the opening period, including a 25-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Jacob Clopton connected with Anthony Thurman for an 18-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Coahoma’s rushing attack has been a strength this season, with Madison and Isaac Day providing a physical presence. Day had a 184-yard game against Holmes, while Madison added 117 rushing yards in that contest.
Northwest Mississippi, meanwhile, holds a 3-2 record overall and is undefeated in division play at 2-0. The Rangers are coming off a 20-10 road win over Northeast Mississippi Community College on Sept. 24, their second consecutive victory. They are ranked No. 11 nationally in the NJCAA poll.
The team’s offense is led by quarterback Noah Gillon, who threw a 52-yard touchdown pass to TyAnthony Elmore last week. Defensively, Northwest showed pressure last week, recording five tackles for loss, including two sacks, while limiting Coahoma to 10 points. The matchup marks a long-standing rivalry, with Northwest owning a 23-2 record against Coahoma and winning the last 15 meetings, including a 45-0 victory last season in Senatobia.
Despite the historical dominance, Coahoma has shown resilience this season. The Tigers nearly defeated Itawamba last week and will look to convert offensive production into their first win of the year. The game also marks Northwest’s Homecoming, adding to the significance of this North Division contest.
