Southern Miss Women’s Soccer Defeats Arkansas State 1-0 for First Sun Belt Win

JONESBORO, Ark. — Southern Miss women’s soccer earned its first Sun Belt Conference win of the season Thursday, defeating Arkansas State 1-0 at A-State Soccer Complex, according to the university.

The Golden Eagles (4-3-2, 1-1 SBC) scored the only goal in the 33rd minute, with Lorilee Taylor finishing after a pass from Zara Werema. Taylor, who played 87 minutes, had a match-high five shots, including two on goal, and was central to Southern Miss’s offensive efforts.

Southern Miss’s defense held strong throughout the match, limiting Arkansas State (2-4-2, 0-2 SBC) to nine first-half shots and four corner kicks. In the second half, the Red Wolves managed only four shots and no corners, as the Golden Eagles protected their lead. Goalkeeper Logan McGruder made eight saves to preserve the shutout.

Defenders Argentina Estrada and Georgia Gray anchored the back line, playing all 90 minutes. Lauren Entremont and Ella Jefcoat also contributed on the defensive end, helping the team secure its third clean sheet of the season.

The win marked a turnaround from a 5-1 loss at Arkansas State last October. It also improved Southern Miss’s road record in the series to 2-0-3 and kept the team unbeaten at A-State Soccer Complex.
