Southern Miss Coach Blake Anderson Discusses Tulane Game and Team Challenges

Hattiesburg, Miss. — Southern Mississippi football coach Blake Anderson addressed the media Monday at the Duff Athletic Center, previewing the Golden Eagles’ upcoming road game against Tulane. The contest is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday at Yulman Stadium. Southern Miss enters the game with a 1-2 record after losing two straight games, while Tulane also stands at 1-2, marking their first meeting in two seasons.

Anderson emphasized the team’s need for improvement. “We’re just not where we need to be yet,” he said. “From top to bottom, we have to do a better job of preparing and executing. We’re making mistakes, especially against good opponents, and that has exposed us.” He added that the team must develop quickly and simplify their game plans to better compete.

The coach discussed offensive challenges, noting that the team has struggled with drops and protection issues. “We’ve got to speed up the learning curve and find ways to win early in the season,” Anderson said. Despite the difficulties, he acknowledged that some players have shown flashes of potential and that the team is gradually gaining confidence in their system.

Regarding injuries, Anderson provided an update on quarterback Ethan Hampton. “He’s beat up with a significant hand injury and won’t be able to throw this week,” he said. Freshman quarterback Lyddie will start in Hampton’s absence, with backup John White also preparing to play. Anderson expressed confidence in Lyddie’s readiness, noting his processing ability and past performance when called into action.

Anderson also reflected on the team’s mindset after back-to-back losses. “The guys are disappointed, but they haven’t quit,” he said. “They’re working hard and trying to do their part. We know we can play better, and that’s what we’re striving for.” The coach emphasized the importance of collective effort to improve as the team faces a challenging schedule ahead.
