Mississippi Valley State Tennis Secures Multiple Comeback Victories at The W

COLumbus, Miss. — The Mississippi Valley State men’s and women’s tennis teams each earned five singles victories Saturday against Mississippi University for Women at Garrett Courts. The teams combined for four comeback wins in deciding match tiebreakers, despite falling in team matches.

Julien Cordeau led the men’s team at No. 1 singles, rallying from a first-set loss to beat David Gimenez, 2-6, 6-0, [10-7]. After dropping the opening set, Cordeau dominated the second with a clean sweep and closed with a tiebreaker victory. Juan Alejandro Rozo added a win at No. 2 singles, taking the first set before Oliva retired. Jorge Navaratte Prats completed the top-three sweep with a win over Ian Arrese, rebounding from a tiebreak loss to win the second set and dominate the match tiebreaker.

In doubles, Cordeau and Rozo fell 6-4 at No. 1 doubles. The W secured the doubles point and received forfeit wins at Nos. 4, 5, and 6 singles. The Delta Devils also pulled off two key comeback wins from Ruramai Nyamakura and Claudia Lopez in women’s singles. Nyamakura defeated Laura Camara, 2-6, 6-0, [10-5], while Lopez came back from an initial tiebreak loss to beat Orianna Roldan, 6-7, 6-2, [11-9]. The women’s team earned the doubles point and also received forfeits at Nos. 3 through 6 singles.

MVSU finished with a 4-0 record in deciding match tiebreakers across the two competitions. The teams combined to win all five contested singles matches in the dual, highlighting their resilience in close matches, according to the university.
