Mississippi Valley State Falls to Alabama State 41-15 in SWAC Game

Montgomery, Ala. — Caleb Brownlow scored two touchdowns and gained 130 all-purpose yards as Mississippi Valley State University lost to Alabama State 41-15 Saturday night at ASU Stadium.

The loss drops the Delta Devils to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. Alabama State improves to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in league action.

Alabama State took an early 17-0 lead, but Mississippi Valley State responded in the second quarter. Quarterback Josh Brown threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Brownlow with 14:24 remaining in the half, cutting the deficit to 17-6. The Hornets added a field goal before halftime to lead 20-6 at the break.

Brown completed 10 of 15 passes for 110 yards and a touchdown. Brownlow caught two passes for 53 yards and a score and added 77 rushing yards on two carries. Alabama State extended its lead immediately after halftime with a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

The Delta Devils mounted a 13-play, 59-yard drive late in the third quarter into the fourth. Jackson Arthur kicked a 23-yard field goal to make it 27-9. After another Hornets touchdown, Brownlow broke loose for a 76-yard rushing score, trimming the deficit to 34-15 with 11:22 remaining.

Brownlow finished with 130 total yards, one yard behind teammate Dayvian Bluitt, who led Valley with 131 yards and contributed on multiple phases of the game. Valley’s defense was led by Javieane Stevens with seven tackles, including three solo stops. Cole McKinney added an interception, and the team finished with eight tackles for loss and two sacks.

Alabama State closed the scoring with a touchdown in the final minute to seal the 41-15 victory.

Mississippi Valley State returns home for a SWAC matchup against Prairie View A&M at Rice-Totten Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m. in Itta Bena, Mississippi.
