Millsaps edges women’s soccer 1-0 in tight non-conference matchup

COLUMBUS, Miss. — The Women’s Soccer team played its most complete match of the season but fell 1-0 to Millsaps College at the Roger Short Soccer Complex. The Owls are now 0-4-0, while the Majors improved to 2-2-0 this season, according to school officials.

Head coach Valerie Greer said the game was closely contested and could have gone either way. “We fought hard from start to finish, just lacked the final touch to make it even or put us ahead,” she said. “Overall, a lot of growth from the previous games, so I’m excited to see where we go from here.”

MUW’s offense was its most productive of the season, outshooting Millsaps 18-17. The team had combined for just 18 shot attempts in the previous three matches. Sophomore goalkeeper Layla Escobedo made 14 saves, her second consecutive game with double-digit stops, including eight in the second half.

The lone goal of the game came in the 21st minute on a shot to the far post by Millsaps. MUW’s defense, led by backline players Adiyah Wood, Presley Andrews, Asia Glass, and Avery Bartlett, helped keep the Majors at bay during the final 45 minutes.

On offense, Reagan Shinn led the attack with five shot attempts, four of which were on goal. Veteran Abby Warchus added four attempts and two shots on target. Carlie Giles and Lucy Warner also contributed offensively, each placing all of their shot attempts on goal.
