Jackson State women’s soccer opened its Southwestern Athletic Conference schedule with a 3-0 victory over Southern on Sunday at the JSU Soccer Field.
The Tigers dominated the match from start to finish, controlling possession and applying pressure on both ends of the field. They took 20 shots, seven on target, while holding Southern to six shots on goal.
Jackson State scored twice in the first half. Kianah Farmer netted her team-high fourth shot in the 39th minute, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead at halftime. She also recorded two shots on goal.
Early in the second half, Ryanne Hawthorn-Harper extended the lead in the 50th minute, assisted by India Wilson. Hawthorn-Harper contributed three shots and an assist on the third goal, scored by Akeelah Mirza in the 62nd minute. Mirza’s goal was her only shot of the game.
Jackson State’s goalkeeper, Taylor Osborn, preserved the shutout with six saves, including three in each half. The Tigers also held Southern scoreless, limiting the Jaguars to 15 shots overall.
Jackson State improved to 5-6 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The team will face Grambling State on the road Thursday at 5 p.m.
