Vanderbilt beats Mississippi State 88-56 in men’s college basketball
Mississippi State suffered an 88-56 loss to Vanderbilt on Saturday morning at Humphrey Coliseum. The Bulldogs, now 7-4 this season, saw their two-game winning streak against Vanderbilt come to an end. Vanderbilt improved to 13-4 overall, maintaining an 82-55 lead in the all-time series, according to the school.
Mississippi State shot 34.5% from the floor, hitting 20 of 58 shots, and made 5 of 26 three-pointers. The team converted 11 of 17 free throws for a 64.7% free-throw percentage. Vanderbilt shot 53.8% overall, making 35 of 65 shots, including 8 of 25 three-pointers. The Commodores went 10 of 11 at the free-throw line, a 90.9% clip.
Vanderbilt’s advantage was clear in the paint, outscoring Mississippi State 50-22. The Commodores also led in points off turnovers, 28-10, and scored 23 points on fastbreaks out of 34 total points in that category.
Josh Hubbard started his 70th consecutive game and scored seven points, adding three steals. Hubbard now has 1,661 career points, sitting 178 points behind Rickey Brown for fifth place in school history. He also extended his school record to 67 consecutive games with at least one three-pointer, surpassing Ole Miss’ Marshall Henderson for the SEC record.
Other notable performances included Jamarion Davis-Fleming with eight rebounds and a team-high tying 8 points, and Jayden Epps leading all scorers with 14 points. Bench scoring also favored Mississippi State, which outscored Vanderbilt 39-19.
Mississippi State’s next game is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m., according to the SEC announcement. Coach Chris Jans’ team will look to rebound after the loss, which marked their 45th loss under Jans at Humphrey Coliseum.
