Texas Southern Tops Alcorn in Overtime Thriller
HOUSTON — Tycen McDaniels scored a career-high 26 points, but Alcorn State’s men’s basketball team lost 92-87 in overtime to Texas Southern on Thursday night at the Health & Physical Education Arena.
The Braves (7-20, 6-9 SWAC) saw their bid for consecutive wins end in a hard-fought game that extended into overtime. Texas Southern (11-16, 9-7 SWAC) moved into sole possession of sixth place in the conference standings.
McDaniels shot 12-for-17 from the field and added 13 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Shane Lancaster scored 17 points, including five three-pointers. Four Braves players finished in double figures, including Jameel Morris (17) and Nick Woodard (15).
Alcorn led by as many as nine points in the first half but was tied at halftime after a late surge by Texas Southern. The Tigers took control early in the second half with a 15-0 run that put them ahead 60-58. The game remained close until a tie at 76-all with five seconds left in regulation sent the game into overtime.
In the extra period, Texas Southern outscored Alcorn 16-11. The Tigers’ Duane Posey and Zytarious Morlte scored key baskets down the stretch. A late three-point attempt by Lancaster missed, sealing the win for Texas Southern.
Alcorn shot 53.3% in the first half but struggled in overtime, converting only 22.2%. The Braves’ bench was outscored 28-2 by the Tigers, who received 14 points from Morlte in the first half. Texas Southern scored 64 points in the paint compared to Alcorn’s 38.
