MRA outlasts Jackson Academy in five sets for MAIS volleyball title
Madison-Ridgeland Academy needed five sets and a 17–15 finish to settle the MAIS Division I volleyball championship Tuesday. The Patriots defeated Jackson Academy 3–2, answering each Raiders comeback before taking the deciding set.
The October 20, 2026, girls varsity final left MRA at 29–10 and Jackson Academy at 46–8. The Patriots also finished the season series with a 2–1 advantage over JA, turning the matchup featured in Tuesday’s Games To Watch into a championship victory.
MRA finishes a final that kept returning to level
MRA opened with a 26–24 set win, but Jackson Academy answered 25–15. The Patriots moved ahead again with a 25–19 third set. JA forced the deciding set by taking the fourth 25–22, leaving both teams one set from the title.
The fifth was another two-point decision, with MRA winning 17–15 to seal the state championship. MRA’s narrow wins in the opening and closing sets bracketed a final in which neither team won consecutive sets. The Patriots took the first, third and fifth, as the final boxscore records.
Lamar’s two-set lead slips away
Meridian’s Lamar also played a five-set girls varsity match Tuesday, but its result ran in the opposite direction. The Raiders took the opening sets 25–22 and 25–21 against Arkansas opponent West Memphis Christian before the Black Knights won the next three.
West Memphis Christian won the third set 25–16, the fourth 25–18 and the fifth 15–11 to complete a 3–2 comeback. The reported result left Lamar at 14–10 and West Memphis Christian at 25–2. Lamar’s early advantage was not enough to avoid a deciding-set loss.
Boys basketball: Lamar Christian wins in Purvis
Lamar Christian defeated Laurel HomeSchool 55–37 in a boys varsity nonconference game in Purvis. The Lions’ record stood at 1–0 after the home victory, while Laurel HomeSchool was 0–1.
