Southwest Mississippi Baseball Opens Alumni Stadium with Win Over Coahoma

Southwest Mississippi Community College baseball hosted Coahoma in a doubleheader Saturday, marking the opening of Alumni Stadium. Before the games, Reggie Jones, president of the SMCC Board of Trustees, participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony on the field.

The Bears took the first game 6-4, with Easton Boyte earning the win in relief. Alden Spencer started for Southwest and pitched 1.2 innings. Luke Simmons threw 3.2 innings with two strikeouts and no runs allowed. Boyte pitched two innings, striking out one and earning the victory. Nik Carney finished the game, striking out one in the ninth to secure the save.

Southwest trailed 4-2 after seven innings but rallied in the eighth, scoring four runs to take a 6-4 lead. Jonathan Miller’s triple and Cam Bolden’s single keyed the rally. Carney retired the side in the ninth to preserve the win. Key offensive contributors included Tanner Moore, Robbie Hokamp, Drew Swan, and Luke Simmons, each with two hits. Miller led with two RBIs, and Bolden and Loper each stole a base.

In the second game, Southwest lost 8-3. Starter Smith pitched 4.1 innings and took the loss. Relievers Camp Segrest, Konnor Cazenave, and Will McLeod combined to hold Coahoma scoreless after the fifth inning. The Bears scored their first runs in the third on Hidalgo’s two-run single, but fell behind 8-3 by the end of the fifth. Hidalgo and Swan each had two hits, with Hidalgo driving in two runs.

Head coach Jack Edmonson praised his team’s effort, noting that they played well except for one inning. “Baseball is a weird game sometimes, and things just don’t go your way. We fought hard to win the first game and let the second one get away from us in one inning,” he said. Edmonson also expressed gratitude for the support during the stadium opening, calling the new facility among the best in the state.

The Bears, now 27-19 overall and 11-11 in conference play, will host Co-Lin in a doubleheader Wednesday.
