Southern Miss Pitcher Kayla Giardina Named Sun Belt Player of the Week
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Miss softball pitcher Kayla Giardina has been named the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.
The sophomore from Kenner, Louisiana, highlighted her week with a perfect game against South Alabama on Sunday, the fourth in program history. She allowed six hits and one walk over 13 innings, posting a 0.54 earned run average for the week.
Giardina held opponents to a .136 batting average and recorded just one earned run during her two complete-game victories, helping lead the Golden Eagles to a series sweep over the Jaguars. Head coach Natalie Poole praised her consistency and competitiveness, noting her preparation and execution during the week.
Giardina leads the Sun Belt in shutouts with five, which ranks 15th nationally. She also allows 1.14 walks per seven innings. Her 17 wins and 13 complete games rank in the top four in the conference and are among the top 40 nationally this season.
