Southern Miss Men’s Golf earns first NCAA regional bid, headed to Athens

The University of Southern Mississippi men’s golf team will compete in its first NCAA regional after earning an at-large bid. The Golden Eagles are seeded 11th in the Athens Regional, announced during the NCAA Men’s Golf Selection Show on the Golf Channel.

The three-day event will be held at the University of Georgia Golf Course from May 18 to 20. The team qualified after finishing third at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament earlier this year.

Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher expressed pride in reaching the NCAA tournament for the first time. “It certainly was a long time coming for our team,” he said. “All the guys and coaches that have come before these guys really laid a great foundation for us to get to this point. We made an investment with the Giddis Golf Center and the Judson Family Facility over these last few years, and I look at this as a return on that investment.”

The Athens Regional is one of six regional sites, with the others located in Bermuda Run, North Carolina; Bryan, Texas; Columbus, Ohio; Corvallis, Oregon; and Marana, Arizona. The top five teams and the top individual from each regional will advance to the NCAA finals, scheduled for May 29 to June 3 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California.

The NCAA Athens Regional is hosted by Georgia. The participating teams include Auburn, Illinois, Vanderbilt, BYU, Georgia, Louisville, Kansas, Northwestern, College of Charleston, Rice, Southern Miss, Harvard, and Howard.
