Southern Miss Edges Illinois 23-20 in 2002 Football Thriller

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Mississippi defeated Illinois 23-20 in a non-conference game on Sept. 7, 2002, at M.M. Roberts Stadium. The Golden Eagles overcame a deficit after three quarters to secure the victory, with Derrick Nix rushing for 201 yards and two touchdowns.

Nix’s standout performance included a 50-yard touchdown run that put Southern Miss ahead 23-17 with 12:55 remaining. Coach Jeff Bower praised the team’s resilience, noting strong defense and effective rushing as key factors.

The game featured an early Illinois lead after Eugene Wilson returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown. The Illini extended their lead to 14-2 after a safety and a fumble return for a touchdown by Mike Hall. Southern Miss responded with a touchdown run by Nix and a 44-yard scoring reception from Marvin Young.

Illinois’ Antoineo Harris rushed for 162 yards, while D’Angelo threw for 171 yards for Southern Miss. Defensively, Etric Pruitt and Michael Boley led the Golden Eagles with 12 and 11 tackles, respectively. Pruitt also recorded two interceptions.

The win marked Bower’s 75th career victory and was part of a season that saw Southern Miss finish 7-6, earning a bowl berth in the Houston Bowl against Oklahoma State.
