HATTIESBURG, Miss. — In its first season in Conference USA, Southern Mississippi defeated Cincinnati 21-17 during homecoming on Nov. 2, 1996, at M.M. Roberts Stadium. The Golden Eagles, ranked No. 23 at the time, aimed to avenge a 16-13 loss to the Bearcats from the previous year.
Southern Miss quarterback Lee Roberts threw three touchdown passes, including the game-winner with 5:12 remaining — a 29-yard pass to Kendrick Lee. The victory drew 25,241 fans and helped the Golden Eagles clinch at least a share of the conference title in their inaugural C-USA season after competing as an independent since 1951.
In the final moments, Cincinnati had a chance after Robert Tate returned a punt 42 yards to midfield with 2:18 left. However, after two incomplete passes and a penalty, Adalius Thomas sacked Cincinnati quarterback Brent Petrus for a 23-yard loss, sealing the win for Southern Miss.
The game showcased strong defensive play from both teams, with Cincinnati outgaining Southern Miss 245 to 191 yards and both teams recording five sacks. Cincinnati led 17-14 after scoring on three consecutive third-quarter possessions, with Petrus replacing starting quarterback Chad Plummer. Southern Miss had led 14-0 early on, thanks to turnovers that led to both touchdowns, with Harold Shaw rushing for 70 yards on 32 carries to lead the ground attack.
The win moved Southern Miss to No. 20 in the AP poll. Despite a subsequent overtime loss at Houston the following week, the Golden Eagles finished the season 8-3 and shared the conference crown, marking a historic season for the program.
