Owls Baseball Secures Top-Four Finish in SLIAC After Split with Greenville
COLUMBUS, Miss. — Mississippi University for Women’s baseball team secured a top-four finish in the upcoming St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) tournament after splitting a doubleheader with Greenville University at CCA Field.
The Owls (21-17, 15-8 SLIAC) lost the first game 8-6 but rebounded to win the second game 11-3. The series outcome guarantees MUW a postseason spot, with the team still vying for a possible bye to the final four or the chance to host its first-ever home playoff game on May 5.
In the first game, the Owls led 3-1 early, thanks to a two-run triple by Baron Brack. However, Greenville scored four runs in the fifth inning to take the lead for good. Despite a late rally in the seventh and eighth innings, MUW fell short, with the final score 8-6. Brack finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs, including a triple, walk, and sacrifice fly. Jay Marbutt added two hits, including a double, with two runs scored.
In game two, Will Carter earned his first start of the season and delivered six strong innings to improve his record to 8-0. He allowed six hits and three runs, with two earned, striking out three and walking one. Zach Connell pitched three scoreless innings to earn his first save, allowing one hit and striking out four.
Brack led the Owls’ offense with a 2-for-5 performance, a double, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Griffin Fuller went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while Chase Marshall had three hits, including his seventh home run of the season. Hastings Gibson also contributed with two hits, a double, and an RBI. Windham and Zack Egan each tallied triples in the game.
The series concludes with a rubber match scheduled for Saturday at 12 p.m., weather permitting.
