Ole Miss Women’s Tennis Falls Short in 4-3 Thriller Against No. 17 South Carolina
Columbia, S.C. — The University of Mississippi women’s tennis team lost to No. 17 South Carolina 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at the Carolina Tennis Center. The Rebels, ranked No. 32, overcame an early deficit but ultimately fell short in a tightly contested match.
Ole Miss took the doubles point to lead 1-0. In singles, South Carolina’s Owen Wilkinson retired from her match against Jana Stojanova, giving the Gamecocks their first point. South Carolina then won three more singles matches, pushing the score to 4-1. The Rebels mounted a comeback, winning two singles matches to tie the score at 3-3.
Brooklyn Olson defeated Sara Borkop 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. Riley Crowder also won her match in a third-set tiebreaker, 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3), against Jane Dunyon, to even the team score. However, Ole Miss’s Andrea Nova lost a three-set marathon to Taylor Goetz, 7-5, 5-7, 7-5, on court four, sealing the victory for South Carolina.
The Rebels (6-3, 1-2 SEC) will return home to face No. 13 Auburn on March 5 at 4 p.m. at the Palmer Salloum Outdoor Tennis Center.
Next, Ole Miss will compete against Auburn at home, with the match scheduled for Thursday at 4 p.m., according to the university’s athletics department.
