Ole Miss Track & Field Wins Three Events, Sets School Record at Vanderbilt Invitational
Nashville, Tenn. — The University of Mississippi track and field team started the Vanderbilt Invitational with notable success on Friday. The Rebels secured three event wins and set a new school record in the men’s 600-meter race, according to meet results.
Redshirt junior Carson Turner led the charge, winning the 600-meter in a time of 1:16.72, breaking the previous Ole Miss school record. Senior Cade Flatt finished second in 1:17.21, and sophomore Max Armstrong was third at 1:17.45. However, the 2022 record by John Rivera Jr. at UAB’s 200-meter track still stands, since that race was run on an oversized track, per meet officials.
In the weight throw, senior Tarik Robinson-O’Hagan dominated with a throw of 22.88 meters (75-00.75), winning comfortably. Fellow seniors Bryson Smith and Mason Hickel followed in second and third place, respectively. Robinson-O’Hagan has only been defeated in the weight throw four times in his college career, three of which occurred at NCAA finals.
On the women’s side, junior Akaoma Odeluga was the top collegian in the weight throw with a toss of 22.22 meters (72-10.75), finishing behind former Ole Miss national champions Jalani Davis and Janeah Stewart. Junior Skylar Soli, redshirt senior Nyah Edwards, and freshman Natalie Brown also posted strong marks in the event.
Ole Miss also saw a career-best performance from senior jumper Lizzie Hatton, who cleared 6.17 meters (20-03) in the long jump. That mark ranks her ninth in school history indoors and is among the top performances nationally for the season. The meet also marked the first multi-events of the year for the Rebels, with freshmen Carmela Coulter and William Numnum competing in the pentathlon and heptathlon, respectively.
Coulter finished ninth in the pentathlon with 3,389 points, highlighted by a second-place finish in the high jump. Numnum sits in eighth place after four events in the heptathlon, with a season-best score of 2,416 points. Competition resumes Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. Central Time.
