Northwest Women’s Basketball Falls to Northeast 60-43
Senatobia, Miss. — The Northwest Mississippi Community College women’s basketball team (15-8, 6-3) fell to Northeast Mississippi Community College (10-14, 4-5) 60-43 on Saturday.
Northwest played strong defense in the first quarter, limiting Northeast to seven points on 23.1% shooting. The Rangers built an 11-0 run after trailing early and held a 12-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. Both teams scored 15 points in the second quarter, with Northwest capitalizing on turnovers to score six of their points in that period. The teams went into halftime with Northeast leading 27-22.
Offensively, Northwest struggled in the second half, shooting 16.7% in the third quarter and 23.1% in the fourth. The Tigers outscored the Rangers in both quarters of the second half. Fouls also impacted Northwest, with players Alorian Story and Dekyra Mitchell in foul trouble. Additionally, Northwest was out-rebounded 46-37.
Head coach LaTaryl Williams said the team did not follow the game plan, which contributed to the loss. Despite the defeat, Story recorded her 13th straight double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Takera Bland added 11 points off the bench as she continues her recovery from a knee injury sustained in December.
Looking ahead, Northwest faces a busy week, playing three games in six days. The team will travel to Southwest Mississippi on Monday, host Hinds at Howard Coliseum on Thursday, and visit Copiah-Lincoln on Saturday. Coach Williams emphasized the importance of focusing on each game and reviewing film to improve. The Rangers’ next game is against Southwest Mississippi in Summit on Monday, Feb. 16.
