Northwest Mississippi Rodeo Team Advances Two to Short Go at Murray State Event
The Northwest Mississippi Community College rodeo team faced a challenging return to competition during the Murray State University-hosted event from March 5 to 7. Out of the team’s roster, only two athletes from the men’s and women’s points teams qualified for the short go, according to team reports.
On the men’s side, Tate Williams led the team with a strong performance in calf roping. Williams posted a 12.6-second run in the opening round, narrowly qualifying for the short go. He improved his time in the final, tying for first place in that round with Tanner Brown of the University of West Alabama. Williams scored 55 points for the round and added 40 in the average, finishing third overall for 100 points in the region standings. This moved him 140 points behind third place and a spot at the College National Finals Rodeo.
Other team members earned points but did not advance to the short go. Cole McCorkle, teaming with Tucker Douglas in team roping, finished fourth in the long go with a 7.5-second run, earning 30 points. The duo did not score in the short go or in the average, placing just outside the top six. Despite the limited points, Douglas moved up to sixth in the Ozark Region standings with 160 points, just 60 points shy of third. McCorkle holds a similar position as a heeler.
The men’s team dropped one place in the regional standings, now fifth, trailing Southern Arkansas University. They are about 900 points behind second place with five rodeos remaining this season. The women’s team fell to eighth in the Ozark standings but remains within 550 points of second place.
The team will return to competition March 12-14 at the East Mississippi Community College rodeo. More information about the schedule and updates can be found at nwccrangers.com or on the team’s social media channels.
