Northwest Mississippi Rodeo Shows Progress at East Mississippi Event
The Northwest Mississippi Community College rodeo team posted an improved performance at the 14th Annual East Mississippi Community College Intercollegiate Rodeo held at the Lauderdale County Agri-Center. Both the men’s and women’s teams earned team points in their second rodeo of the spring season.
The men’s team finished seventh for the second week in a row, while the women took sixth place. The best showing for the Rangers came in steer wrestling, where three team members advanced to the short go. Trey Weekley led the way with the fourth-fastest time in the long go at 6.3 seconds, earning 30 points. He did not catch his second steer in the short go.
Will Collier contributed points to his season total by reaching the short go with a 15.8-second run. He posted the third-fastest time in the short go at 5.5 seconds and finished third in the average, earning 60 points overall. Collier’s performance moved him into the top four in the Ozark Region standings with 260 points. Brayden Mahon also made the short go, with a 5.8-second run that placed him fourth in the round. His 16.9-second first run kept him outside the top six in the average, but he still added points, giving him 340 on the season and keeping him in the top three nationally.
Weekley’s success continued in team roping, where he partnered with Austin Brooks of the University of West Alabama. The duo caught their steer in 8.8 seconds to qualify eighth, then posted a 13.7-second run in the short go, which was fifth in that round. Their combined time placed them fourth in the average, earning 50 points. This was Weekley’s first points of the season in team roping and marked his third event as he pursues an all-around qualification.
On the women’s side, Chance Raegan earned her first points of the season in goat tying. She qualified for the short go with an eight-second run and improved to 7.9 seconds in the final round, finishing fifth in that round and fifth in the average for a 40-point weekend.
The Rangers will compete again March 19-21 at the Pearl River Rodeo in Poplarville. Full details about the team can be found at nwccrangers.com or on Northwest’s social media channels.
