Northwest Mississippi Cheer, Dance Teams Excel at UCA and UDA Camps

The cheer and dance teams at Northwest Mississippi Community College participated in UDA and UCA spirit camps at the University of Alabama from July 16 to 19. The four-day camps provided opportunities for skill development, team bonding, and competitive preparation for the upcoming UDA and UCA Nationals in January, according to school officials.

Dance coach Patrice Christian of Germantown, Tennessee, said the program grew significantly during the camp. She praised the team’s leadership, teamwork, and resilience. Northwest Dance received awards for first place in fight song and home routines, as well as superior distinctions in game day and camp categories. Christian highlighted the home routine, produced in just 11 days, as a Nationals-level performance.

Head cheer coach Brandon Casey of Hernando noted the camp’s role in preparing the team for the season’s challenges. The cheer team earned the Most Collegiate Award, recognizing their embodiment of college cheerleading standards, along with eight Blue Superior Ribbons. The co-ed cheer squad took first place in overall game day and timeout, second in sideline, and third in fight song.

Casey also praised the All-Girl squad for their resilience against tough competition, including University of Alabama’s D1A teams. The team finished second in overall game day, sideline, and timeout, and third in fight song. Sophomore Avery Neal of Oxford emphasized the value of the camp experience, stating it fostered leadership and motivation for future challenges.
