Northwest Men’s Tennis Falls to Jones College in Semifinals of Region 23 Tournament
ELLISVILLE — The Northwest Mississippi Community College men’s tennis team was eliminated from the Region 23 Tournament after a 5-1 loss to top-seeded Jones College at the Bobcat Tennis Courts. The loss ends Northwest’s run in the semifinals, and the team will compete in the third-place match Saturday at 2 p.m., against either Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College or Copiah-Lincoln Community College.
Head coach Mounce said the team competed well but fell short overall. “Similar to the girls’ match last week, we played well in spots,” he said. “To beat a team as talented as Jones, you have to play a complete match.”
Jones maintained momentum throughout the match, losing only one match to a retirement. Despite the defeat, Northwest highlighted some bright spots. Sophomore Jordan Mitchell played a key role, teaming with Luca Morris in doubles to push Jones to the limit with an 8-5 loss. Mitchell also was winning his singles match, leading 6-3 in the first set and up 2-1 in the second when the match was halted after Jones clinched the overall victory.
The third-place match is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Bobcat Tennis Courts in Ellisville. Coach Mounce expressed a desire for his team to finish strong for the graduating sophomores. “We want to go out with a win for these players who have given so much to the program,” he said. “They’ve worked hard for this opportunity, and I want the guys to go out and win for each other.”
