Missouri beats Mississippi State 84-79 behind physical play

Missouri topped Mississippi State 84-79 Saturday in college basketball action, with the Bulldogs struggling to contain the Tigers’ physicality and offensive rebounding. Coach Chris Jans attributed the loss to turnovers and defensive lapses.

Jans said Missouri’s aggressive play early on put Mississippi State on its heels, especially with the Tigers knocking down three-pointers and gaining a sizable lead. Despite a comeback effort and a late push, the Bulldogs couldn’t overcome the deficit, which peaked at 16 points with 14 minutes remaining.

Jans noted the defensive adjustments made during the game, including switching defenses and trying to limit Missouri’s standout players. He pointed out that Missouri’s big, physical lineup, including three players 6-foot-8 or taller, posed significant challenges for his team.

The coach emphasized that turnovers hurt Mississippi State, with Missouri scoring 21 points off those mistakes. Jans also highlighted Mark Mitchell’s strong performance, as the Tigers’ forward scored 19 points and drew 12 fouls, making him difficult to neutralize.

Looking ahead, Jans said the team plans to focus on health and tactical adjustments during an upcoming bye week before facing Arkansas at home. He stressed the importance of maintaining confidence and staying together as they prepare for the second half of the SEC schedule.
