Mississippi Valley State edges Jackson State 13-11 in SWAC baseball series opener

ITTA BENA, Miss. — Jackson State fell 13-11 to Mississippi Valley State in Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball action Saturday night at Magnolia Field. Despite homers from Tyree Reed, Diego Melendez, and Hederick Torres, the Tigers couldn’t complete a late rally.

Reed, who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and walks, opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the second inning. Melendez added a solo shot in the third, extending his hitting streak to 19 games. Torres hit his first home run of the season in the seventh inning, trimming the deficit to 13-9, but the Tigers couldn’t catch up.

Mississippi Valley State responded with a five-run fifth inning to take a commanding lead. The Delta Devils scored three runs in that frame, including a two-run double from Gabe Huelsing and a two-RBI single from Isreal Ramos. The home team added two more runs in the sixth to extend their lead to 13-6.

Jackson State made a late push with a two-run homer from Torres in the seventh and a pair of RBIs in the ninth inning, but it wasn’t enough. Tyshon Patty and Payton Boines each contributed RBIs in the final inning, bringing the Tigers within two runs. The teams will meet again Sunday at 1 p.m. for the series finale.
