Jackson State wins third straight SWAC series with 7-1 victory over Mississippi Valley State

Jackson State claimed its third consecutive SWAC series Sunday after defeating Mississippi Valley State 7-1 at Magnolia Field. The Tigers increased their conference record to 14-13 and overall to 24-23, according to school sources.

Diego Melendez opened the scoring in the first inning with an RBI double, extending his hitting streak to 20 games. The Tigers added two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to lead 4-0. Mississippi Valley State scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, trimming the lead to 4-1. Jackson State responded with two runs in the seventh, pushing the lead to 6-1, and Robert Tate Jr. hit a solo home run in the ninth to finalize the score at 7-1.

Pierre Cabral led the Tigers with a 3-for-5 effort, driving in two runs and scoring once. Robert Tate Jr. also went 3-for-5, with a solo home run. Hederick Torres and Shemar Harris each finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Torres scored a run in the victory.

Derek Arrocha earned the win in a complete-game effort, allowing one run on seven hits with four strikeouts. This was his first complete game of the season and the fourth for the Tigers in 2023, according to school officials.

Jackson State will host Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the final regular-season series starting Thursday, with the teams tied in the conference standings. The Tigers’ social media accounts and official website will provide updates on the series.
