Mississippi Valley Falls Short Against Arkansas-Pine Bluff in SWAC Tournament
COLLEGE PARK, Ga. — The Mississippi Valley State University women’s basketball team lost to Arkansas-Pine Bluff 81-74 in the SWAC tournament second round. The Devilettes, the No. 9 seed, trailed early but mounted a strong comeback attempt, according to the game summary.
Mississippi Valley State finished the season with an 8-23 record, including a 6-12 mark in conference play. Arkansas-Pine Bluff, the No. 7 seed, finished 14-15 overall and 10-8 in SWAC action. The Golden Lions now hold a series lead of 22-16 since the 2008-09 season, with a current winning streak of three games.
Janiya Jones was the top scorer for the Devilettes, posting a career-high 22 points on 8-for-16 shooting and grabbing eight rebounds. Nairobi Lewis contributed five blocks, eight rebounds, and two steals. Jaeda Murphy dished out a career-best nine assists and scored 11 points, nearly achieving a double-double. Desiree Smith added 12 rebounds and nine points.
Sydnei Marshall scored 15 points, including four free throws and a three-pointer, while Kylah McCullers finished with 12 points. Mississippi Valley State’s season concluded with eight victories, including one in the postseason for the second consecutive year. The team also secured a non-conference win over Lipscomb.
