Mississippi State’s Isaac Smith Eyes Career-Defining Senior Season

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Mississippi State safety Isaac Smith enters his senior season with confidence, believing a breakthrough is imminent for the Bulldogs, according to the player and sources familiar with the team.

Smith, a Fulton, Mississippi native and four-star prospect, said he senses something special brewing under head coach Jeff Lebby. “I really think a breakthrough is coming,” Smith said. “Coach Lebby is a great coach and even better person. He cares about us beyond football, and I believe we can achieve something big.”

Smith, who was recruited by the late Mike Leach and joined MSU as a true freshman in 2023, has become a key figure in the program. He led the Southeastern Conference with 127 tackles last season and received All-SEC honors for his performance despite battling injuries. His leadership and presence have made him a valued mentor to teammates like cornerback Kelley Jones.

Jones praised Smith’s influence, citing his aggressive tackling style and leadership on and off the field. “He’s meant so much to me,” Jones said. “I’ve learned a lot from him, and he’s a true leader for all of us.”

Smith also pointed to the team’s growth under Lebby, noting that Mississippi State improved from two wins two years ago to five last season. He believes the team’s depth and resilience will be crucial in the upcoming campaign. “We have multiple guys at every position who can step up,” Smith said. “If everything comes together, we can finally reach that breakthrough we’ve been working toward.”

Reflecting on his time at MSU, Smith emphasized the significance of playing in his home state and representing Starkville. “It would mean the world to me,” he said. “Having the opportunity to stay home and wear the Maroon and White has been more than just about football.
