STARKVILLE — For six seasons, Mississippi State assistant soccer coach Kat Stratton has upheld a team tradition called Big Dawg Energy. The award recognizes players who exemplify the team’s core values, known as the D.A.W.G.S. Mentality, Stratton said, regardless of goal-scoring statistics.
Stratton explained that the award focuses on effort, character, and grit. “It’s not just because you score goals or make saves,” she said. “It’s about the grit and the character built through this program.” The recognition encourages players to look beyond the score and find positives in every game, even in losses.
The award has been given to players like Chiara Tappe, who, despite not scoring, demonstrated relentless effort by playing all over the pitch, winning tackles, and setting the tone for her team, according to head coach Kevin O’Brien. The coaches meet after each game to select the recipient, but the celebration happens as a team when the winner is announced.
In rare cases, such as a victory against Alcorn State, multiple players or the entire team can earn the award, reflecting a collective commitment to the Bulldog Mentality. Stratton said the team has fully embraced the tradition, living up to the standards it promotes.
Mississippi State’s soccer team has used this award to reinforce the importance of effort and character, especially during a competitive SEC schedule that can hinge on narrow results. The Big Dawg Energy award highlights that performance goes beyond the stat sheet and is rooted in perseverance and team spirit.
