Mississippi State Falls to Texas in SEC Men’s Tennis Championship
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Mississippi State’s men’s tennis team saw its run at the SEC Championship end with a 4-2 loss to Texas on Sunday at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
The Longhorns secured the doubles point early, winning on courts two and three, giving them an advantage entering singles play. Mississippi State responded by taking five of six first sets in singles and earning a victory from Bryan Hernandez Cortes on court five, tying the match at 1-1.
Benito Sanchez Martinez delivered a straight-sets win on court one, defeating Sebastian Gorzny 6-2, 6-4 and giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. However, Texas rallied, winning three singles matches, including a comeback on court two and a three-set victory on court six to clinch the title.
The Bulldogs finished the tournament with a 22-5 record and earned their best SEC finish since 2019. They now prepare for the NCAA Tournament, which begins May 1, carrying momentum from their postseason performance.
Mississippi State’s record stands at 21-5 overall and 11-3 in SEC play. The team highlighted Hernandez Cortes’s ninth consecutive singles victory and Sanchez Martinez’s first top-3 singles win of the season as notable achievements of the tournament.
