Mississippi State Advances to NCAA Super Regionals with Sweep of Wisconsin
STARKVILLE, Miss. — Sixth-ranked Mississippi State men’s tennis team earned a 4-0 victory over Wisconsin on Saturday, advancing to the NCAA Super Regionals at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre. The Bulldogs improved to 40-30 all-time in the NCAA Tournament with the win, which included a strong performance in doubles and singles matches.
Mississippi State took control early by securing the doubles point. Mario Martinez Serrano and Niccolo Baroni won 6-3 on court 2, while Bryan Hernandez Cortes and Petar Jovanovic clinched the point with a 6-4 victory on court 3, according to the school’s report.
In singles play, the Bulldogs quickly built a commanding lead. Hernandez Cortes extended his career-best 11-match winning streak with a straight-sets victory on court 6. Benito Sanchez Martinez followed with a 6-3, 6-0 win on court 1, putting Mississippi State in a strong position. Mario Martinez Serrano sealed the match with a 6-1, 6-4 win on court 4, earning his eighth dual-match clinch of the season.
Mississippi State improved to 12-1 all-time in the Starkville Regional and saw Hernandez Cortes and Jovanovic secure their second consecutive doubles clinch together, according to the school. The Bulldogs will face the winner of the Georgia-N.C. State match next weekend at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre for a spot in the NCAA quarterfinals.
