Mercer edges Jackson State 2-1 in season opener

Jackson, Miss. — Jackson State’s women’s soccer team lost its season opener to Mercer 2-1 on Wednesday at the JSU Soccer Field. The Tigers mounted a second-half rally but fell just short.

Mercer led 2-0 at halftime after two goals from Payton Nutzman. Nutzman scored from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute and added a second in the 42nd minute off an assist from Isabella DeSantis.

Jackson State responded quickly after the break, generating several chances. Kaila Tablado scored in the 61st minute to cut the lead to 2-1, energizing the Tigers. Tablado led the team with three shots and scored the lone goal.

The Tigers continued pressing, with attempts from Cora Kmiec and Akeelah Mirza in the second half. Despite being down a player after a red card in the 81st minute, Jackson State kept fighting. Goalkeeper Kianah Farmer made five saves in each half, finishing with 10 saves overall.

Although the Tigers outshot Mercer 8-2 after halftime and scored in the second half, they couldn’t find an equalizer. Mercer held on for the win, securing their first victory of the season.

Jackson State will next travel to Shreveport, Louisiana, to face Abilene Christian at 7 p.m.
