Lady Statesmen Lose in Overtime at Lee, 59-58

The Delta State University women’s basketball team suffered a 59-58 overtime loss Thursday night at Lee University in Gulf South Conference action at Walker Arena.

Delta State (15-10, 13-7 GSC) led for more than 35 minutes and built an 18-point advantage midway through the third quarter. The Lady Statesmen started strong, opening the game with a 13-2 run and taking a 14-7 lead after the first quarter.

Delta State continued its solid play in the second quarter, extending the margin to 29-17 at halftime. Lee (16-8, 12-7 GSC) mounted a comeback in the second half, outscoring Delta State 18-9 in the third quarter and chipping away at the lead in the fourth.

The game was tied at 53-53 after regulation, sending it into overtime. Both teams exchanged baskets in the extra period, but Lee capitalized at the free throw line and edged ahead in the final seconds to secure the win.

Jariyah Williamson led Delta State with 13 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Dakiya Toney added 11 points and seven rebounds, while Adyson Roberts contributed nine points and five assists off the bench. Kennedee Shelton scored six points and grabbed seven rebounds. The Lady Statesmen shot 43.1% from the field and out-rebounded Lee 41-27, including 33 points from the bench.

However, Lee’s 16-of-19 performance at the free throw line proved decisive in the outcome. Delta State will next travel to Nashville to face Trevecca Nazarene University on Saturday at 2 p.m. Central Time.
