Jones College women’s tennis team defeats Oxford-Emory, 8-1
Ninth-ranked Jones College defeated No. 10 Oxford-Emory of Georgia 8-1 Saturday morning at NE Park Tennis Center.
Jones swept all three doubles matches. Heidi Clayton of New Albany and Theresa Emelio of Australia won the No. 1 doubles match, 8-2, over Rachel Blais. Camila Piquín and Maria Martinez, both from Argentina, beat Anastasiya Speyer and Chloe Macaluso, 8-2, in No. 2 doubles. Katlin Porcello of Oak Grove and Josie Tullos of Newton County defeated Zari Haque and Arielle Gomberg, 8-4, in No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Clayton defeated Speyer 6-2, 6-1, in No. 2 singles. Martinez beat Karina Artemiev 6-2, 6-1, in No. 3 singles. Emelio won against Haque 6-0, 6-2, in No. 4 singles. Porcello outlasted Macaluso 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) in No. 5 singles. Tullos defeated Gomberg 6-4, 6-2, in No. 6 singles. Piquín fell to Blais 4-6, 6-1, 0-1 (8-10) in the top singles match.
The Bobcats, now 2-0, are scheduled to play at Northwest on Friday and will host Rust College in New Albany on Feb. 21.
