Jones College Volleyball Opens Season with Win Over Copiah-Lincoln in Debut
ELLISVILLE, Miss. — Jones College’s volleyball team opened its season with a 3-1 victory over Copiah-Lincoln Community College Monday night. The match marked the first meeting between the two programs, with the Bobcats winning the inaugural contest in four sets.
Jones dropped the first set 25-21 but responded with three straight wins, 25-21, 25-21, and 25-23. Head coach John Dussouy credited leadership from his sophomores for their comeback after a slow start. “We came out a little slow, and I think in the end, with some of the sophomore leadership that we have, we were able to respond,” he said. “We’re still having a little bit of freshman mistakes, but I think over time this team will start to trust each other. We have the talent, we have the athletic ability. We’ve just got to put it all together.”
Jones struggled offensively in the opening set, hitting just .033 with 11 kills and 10 attack errors on 30 attempts. Copiah-Lincoln took advantage, winning the first set. The Bobcats improved offensively in the second set, hitting .226 with 12 kills and five errors on 31 attempts to level the match. They continued to find rhythm in the third, with 14 kills on 32 attacks and a .219 hitting percentage, earning a 25-21 win to go up 2-1.
The fourth set was the closest, with Jones hitting a season-best .333 on 21 attacks with just three errors. They secured the match with a 25-23 victory. Overall, Jones finished with 47 kills, a team hitting percentage of .193, 44 assists, 10 service aces, 66 digs, and four blocks.
Izzi Barnes led the team offensively, recording 12 kills without an error on 15 attempts for a .800 clip. Myah Favre also posted 12 kills and added a block assist. Other notable players included Selah Sandridge, Amaya Wilson, Jailly Vance, Claire Wicker, and Olivia Guth, who contributed in various roles, including defense, setting, and serving.
Jones returns to action Tuesday at home against Reid State. The match starts at 5 p.m., with tickets available online for $8 and at the door for $10. All home matches are streamed online at jcbobcats.com/watch.
