Jones College opens MACCC tennis season with consecutive wins over Northwest and Rust
NEW ALBANY, Miss. — Jones College’s women’s tennis team opened MACCC play with two victories over the weekend. The No. 9 Bobcats defeated No. 20 Northwest 9-0 on Friday and beat Rust College 7-0 on Saturday.
At the Ranger Outdoor Complex on Friday, Jones dominated in singles and doubles matches. Heidi Clayton and Theresa Emelio won the No. 1 doubles match 8-1, while Camila Piquín and Maria Martinez secured the No. 2 doubles point with the same score. Katlin Porcello and Josie Tullos won the No. 3 doubles match 8-4.
Clayton swept Sanchez 6-0, 6-1 in singles, and Piquín defeated Chaparro 6-3, 6-1. Martinez beat Blanco 6-0, 6-4, and Emelio defeated Davis 6-1, 6-2. Porcello topped Kicker 6-0, 6-3, and Tullos blanked McCain 6-0, 6-0.
The following day at BNA Park, Jones continued its strong play with a 7-0 victory over Rust College. The Bobcats took the doubles point with wins by Clayton and Emelio, and Piquín and Martinez, both with 6-0 scores. Porcello and Tullos won by default.
In singles, Clayton dominated Kimbiyila 6-0, 6-0, and Piquín defeated Honfoga 6-1, 6-2. Porcello beat McPhee 6-3, 6-4, and Caroline Kilpatrick from Brookhaven earned a 6-1, 6-0 win. Jones secured wins by default at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
The team is scheduled to resume conference play Tuesday at 2 p.m. against Southwest.
