Jones College Closes Regular Season with Win Over Co-Lin, Secures MACCC Top Spot

Wesson, Miss. — Jones College secured the top spot in the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference with an 8-1 victory over Copiah-Lincoln on Friday at the C-L Tennis Complex.

The Bobcats have won 12 consecutive matches against Co-Lin. Their win guarantees them hosting rights for the Region 23 Tournament scheduled for April 9-11. Jones now sports an 11-0 overall record and is 8-0 in conference play.

Jones is scheduled to host No. 13 Coastal Alabama-South at 1 p.m. Monday and will conclude league play at 2 p.m. Tuesday against No. 24 Itawamba. Co-Lin drops to 9-2 overall and 7-1 in the MACCC.

In doubles play, Heidi Clayton of New Albany and Theresa Emelio of Australia edged Ruri Takeuchi and Georgina Labusch, 9-7, in No. 1 doubles. Maria Martinez and Camila Piquín, both from Argentina, defeated Domenica Gruezo and Ady Locke, 8-3, in No. 2 doubles. Katlin Porcello of Oak Grove and Josie Tullos of Newton County beat Clara Barton Calcote and Allie McNeill, 8-3, in No. 3 doubles.

In singles, Piquín lost a close match to Takeuchi, 1-6, 7-5, 3-10. Clayton defeated Gruezo, 6-1, 6-3, and Martinez beat Labusch, 6-3, 6-2. Emelio won against Locke, 6-1, 6-1, and Porcello defeated Calcote, 6-0, 6-1. Tullos topped Ella Claire Thompson, 6-1, 6-1. In additional matches, Emily Rogers of West Jones beat Macy McDaniel, 8-0, and Caroline Kilpatrick of Brookhaven defeated McNeill, 8-4.
