James’ Last-Second Steal and Score Lifts Mississippi Valley State Over Texas Southern

ITTA BENA, Miss. — Michael James delivered a dramatic finish for Mississippi Valley State University, stealing an inbound pass from Texas Southern and scoring just before the final horn to secure a 72-71 victory. The game, held at the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex, saw 20 lead changes and kept fans on the edge of their seats.

The win snapped a 26-game losing streak for the Delta Devils, who improved to 2-26 overall and 1-13 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. Texas Southern fell to 10-16 overall and 8-7 in league play.

James, the team’s top scorer, finished with 24 points on 8-of-19 shooting. He also added four assists, two steals, and two rebounds, playing all 40 minutes. His final play, a steal and layup, sealed the victory for Mississippi Valley State.

Senior Daniel Mayfield scored 17 points, leading the team on the boards with seven rebounds and contributing two steals. Xzayvion Childress added 11 points, five rebounds, and five assists, while Patrick Punch scored 10 points with two steals and two assists.
