Jackson State women’s basketball beats Mississippi Valley State on the road
Jackson State’s women’s basketball team secured a much-needed road win against Mississippi Valley State on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers defeated the Delta Devillettes 60-54 in Itta Bena, Mississippi.
Derica McCall opened the scoring for Jackson State with a three-pointer, giving the Tigers an early 3-2 lead. Jackson State built a 16-10 advantage in the first quarter before Mississippi Valley State rallied to tie the game at 17-17 entering the second quarter. The Devillettes led throughout the second period and carried a 32-30 lead into halftime.
After halftime, Mississippi Valley State extended its lead as Sydnei Marshall made a driving layup and a free throw following a foul. Jackson State responded with a layup from Angel Wilkinson to tie the game at 35, then took the lead on a three-pointer from Rhema Pegues. The Tigers maintained a 47-40 edge heading into the final quarter. They opened the fourth with a 7-2 run and never trailed again, finishing with a 64-50 victory.
Jackson State shot 69.6% (16-for-23) from the free throw line and 40% (22-for-55) from the field. Jada Patton led the team with 14 points, four rebounds, and a block. Wilkinson scored 12 points with four rebounds, while Pegues added 10 points and five rebounds. The Tigers scored 28 points in the paint, with 19 bench points and 18 points off 16 turnovers by Mississippi Valley State.
For Mississippi Valley State, Sydnei Marshall led with 14 points. Desiree Smith contributed seven rebounds. The Devillettes shot 71.4% (10-for-14) from the free throw line and 32.8% (19-for-58) from the field. They scored 22 points in the paint, with 19 bench points and 11 points off 19 turnovers by Jackson State.
The Tigers will return to the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Aquatic Center to host Bethune-Cookman on Thursday at 6 p.m.
