Jackson State Tops No. 8 Youngstown State at Music City Classic
SMYRNA, Tenn. — Jackson State University defeated the eighth-ranked Youngstown State Penguins during the Music City Classic over the weekend, marking a notable achievement against tough competition, according to the school.
The Tigers opened the event with a 3-2 record in Baker play, earning wins against Alabama A&M, Caroll University, and Belmont Abbey College. Their losses came against No. 10 Sacred Heart and No. 21 UAB, with scores of 1,030-885 and 1,090-1,028, respectively, the school said.
Jackson State’s highlight came in the traditional round when they edged Youngstown State, 966-959, to secure their best win of the tournament. They also defeated UMES, 943-894, and Quincy University, 910-858, to finish the day on a strong note.
On Sunday, the Tigers faced No. 15 Newman University in the first round. They won the first game 178-175 but lost the following three. They responded with a 198-174 victory in game six but fell in the seventh game, 188-171. Jackson State then redeemed itself with a five-game victory over UMES to conclude the tournament at 16th place, the school said.
