Hinds Community College Wins Two Titles at NJCAA Indoor Championships

TOPEKA, Kan. — Hinds Community College concluded the NJCAA Indoor National Championships with a strong performance, earning two national titles, three runner-up finishes, and numerous All-American honors across both men’s and women’s events.

The Eagles placed seventh in the men’s team standings and tenth in the women’s standings, demonstrating depth and consistency throughout the weekend. Queen Usunobun defended her title in the women’s 400-meter dash, winning in 54.07 seconds after entering as the top qualifier.

On the men’s side, Jayval Wright claimed the 200-meter title in 20.62 seconds, showcasing his sprinting range and finishing a standout meet. Wright also finished second in the men’s 60-meter dash, clocking 6.61 seconds, adding to Hinds’ medal tally.

Hinds added three silver medals with standout performances from Matthew Sullivan in the men’s 60-meter hurdles (7.82 seconds), Wright in the 60-meter dash, and the women’s 4×400-meter relay team of Angel Cumberbatch, Akaree Roberts, Usunobun, and Kylie Norbert, which finished in 3:43.14.

Several Eagles earned All-American honors by finishing among the top eight in their events. Raheem Pinnock placed fourth in the men’s 60-meter (6.66 seconds) and 200-meter (20.82 seconds), while Curtis Coleman III finished sixth in the 60-meter. Caneilia Hope added a seventh-place finish in the women’s 60-meter (7.58 seconds), and Demetrius Taite Jr. was sixth in the men’s triple jump with a mark of 15.01 meters (49-3).

Other notable performances included Usunobun finishing eighth in the women’s 200 meters and Akaree Roberts placing eighth in the women’s 600 meters. The men’s 4×400 relay team finished ninth with a time of 3:12.70, contributing to Hinds’ competitive presence across multiple events.

Overall, both Hinds teams secured top-ten finishes supported by strong qualifying rounds and consistent scoring throughout the meet, highlighting the program’s depth and talent.
