Hinds Community College Names Smith and Duffy as Eagle Award Winners

Raymond, Miss. — Hinds Community College named softball player Mackenzie Smith and men’s soccer player Elliot Duffy as its Eagle Award winners Friday during a ceremony at Mayo Fieldhouse.

The Eagle Award is given annually to the college’s most outstanding male and female student-athletes. Coaches from each sport nominate candidates, and the college’s athletic staff selects recipients based on athletic and academic achievements, as well as community involvement.

Smith, a Hattiesburg native, played as the starting right fielder for the Lady Eagles. She appeared in all 50 games this season, batting .277 with 40 hits, three triples, three home runs and 33 RBIs. Off the field, she maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA and participated in campus organizations including the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Phi Theta Kappa, and was named to both the President’s and Dean’s Lists.

Duffy, from Bedford, England, served as the starting goalkeeper for the Eagles. He played in all 20 matches, recording 72 saves and allowing 25 goals. Duffy was voted team captain and earned All-MACCC First Team honors after making the all-conference team in consecutive seasons. Off the field, he volunteered with the Clinton Youth Soccer Association and tutored students in the community.
