Florida A&M Overcomes Mississippi Valley State in High-Scoring Game
Florida A&M University scored five runs in the fourth inning to rally from a 5-2 deficit and went on to defeat Mississippi Valley State 14-8 on Tuesday at Moore-Kittles Field in Tallahassee. The Rattlers improved to 20-17 overall and 15-3 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, while the Delta Devils fell to 11-25 and 7-11 in the conference, according to game statistics.
Mississippi Valley State took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by Cody Leming’s triple and a run-scoring groundout. Florida A&M responded with a three-run third, capped by a sacrifice fly from Chris Soeder. The Rattlers then scored five runs in the fourth to take the lead for good, with Gabe Huelsing driving in a run with a single and Josue Figueroa adding two RBIs with a double.
The game saw offensive contributions from both sides, including Leming’s two RBIs and a first career triple from Leming at a four-year institution. Jace Jones pitched 2.2 scoreless innings in relief for Mississippi Valley State, striking out five batters. Logan Darnell started for the Delta Devils, allowing two runs over three innings with two strikeouts.
Florida A&M’s victory extended its series lead over Mississippi Valley State to 23-2 since 2011, with the Rattlers now riding a three-game winning streak against the Delta Devils. The teams are scheduled to face each other again this weekend in Montgomery, Alabama, where Mississippi Valley State’s softball team will also compete.
