Delta State Softball Prepares for Key Matchup Against No. 6 AUM in Montgomery

The Delta State University softball team will travel to Montgomery, Alabama, this weekend to face No. 6 Auburn Montgomery in a critical conference series. The Lady Statesmen are seeking wins to improve their chances of qualifying for the Gulf South Conference tournament.

The teams will play a doubleheader Friday starting at 1 p.m., followed by a single game Saturday at noon. All three games will be streamed live on the FloCollege Network, according to school officials.

Delta State enters the series with a 12-29 record overall and a 6-18 mark in GSC play. The Lady Statesmen hope to surpass their 2025 season win total with a strong showing against the nationally ranked Warhawks, who hold a 34-7 record and are 17-7 in conference play.

Senior third baseman Calli McConnell led a solid offensive showing last weekend, going 4-for-8 with a double and an RBI. Kyleigh Wheaton, a junior utility player, is batting .383 with 21 extra-base hits and 35 RBIs. Carly Dunigan, another junior, is hitting .368 with 19 extra-base hits and 27 RBIs. Maeve Lavoy has been effective in the circle, pitching 104 innings with a 4.76 ERA and 72 strikeouts, according to team stats.

Auburn Montgomery features several offensive standouts. Chloe Baynes leads the Warhawks with a .466 batting average, seven extra-base hits, and 14 RBIs, along with 41 stolen bases. Rebecca Komers also boasts a high batting average, with five home runs, 10 doubles, 35 RBIs, and 17 stolen bases. The Warhawks are currently tied for second in the GSC standings and are ranked sixth in the NFCA Top 25 poll.

The series represents a pivotal moment for Delta State as they attempt to climb the conference standings and secure a spot in the postseason tournament.
