Alcorn to Host Southern in Key SWAC Baseball Series

Alcorn State’s baseball team returns home to Willie E. ‘Rat’ McGowan Stadium this weekend for a three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference series against Southern University. The series begins Friday, April 17, at 6 p.m., with games scheduled through Sunday, April 19.

Alcorn, currently last in the SWAC standings, is just five games behind a spot in the conference tournament. The Braves aim to secure their first series win of the season in league play. Jaylyn Bennett leads the team with a .362 batting average, while Kanious Davis has a 3-2 pitching record with a 10.00 ERA and 25 strikeouts.

Southern enters the series with an 8-7 conference record and is tied for fifth in the SWAC. The Jaguars are riding a four-game winning streak after sweeping Grambling State last weekend. KJ White Jr. leads Southern with a .381 batting average, and the team has stolen 93 bases this season. Bobby Spencer has five wins on the mound, and Myles Dismute has three.

The series marks the first time since May 2023 that the games are played in Lorman. The last six meetings have been in Baton Rouge, with Southern winning four of those games. Alcorn won two straight at the end of the 2024 season, but Southern has claimed eight of the last 10 matchups overall.

Coach Hardy emphasized the importance of the series, stating, ‘This is a big-time SWAC series. Our guys understand what’s at stake. We need to play clean baseball and focus on the little things to give ourselves a chance.’

Southern’s recent success includes a series sweep of Grambling and a current four-game winning streak. The Jaguars are looking to improve their position in the league standings as the season progresses.

Alcorn will next travel to face Southern-New Orleans on Tuesday, April 21, at 6 p.m. Follow Alcorn State Sports on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube for updates and behind-the-scenes coverage.
