Delta State men’s tennis falls to Lee in GSC quarterfinals

Tuscaloosa, Ala. — Delta State University’s men’s tennis team saw its season end Thursday with a 4-0 loss to No. 12 Lee in the Gulf South Conference quarterfinals at the Tuscaloosa Tennis Center.

The Statesmen finished with an 11-10 record after earning a spot in the conference tournament and competing against one of the nation’s top-ranked teams. Lee improved to 12-1 with the victory.

Lee secured the doubles point by winning at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The Flames’ Rytis Razminas and Francisco Guimaraes defeated Delta State’s Alejandro Bravo and Simon Ojeda 6-4 at No. 2 doubles, while Razminas and Guimaraes won 6-2 over Juan Diego Alzate and Joaquin Jarochevsky at No. 3 doubles. The No. 1 doubles match featuring Valentino Millimaci and Valentin Greco was left unfinished with Lee leading 5-4.

In singles play, Lee quickly extended its lead with straight-set wins at No. 5 and No. 6. Francisco Guimaraes defeated Millimaci 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5, and Razminas beat Ojeda 6-2, 7-5 at No. 6. The match-clinching point came at No. 3 singles when Jip Langerhuizen defeated Alzate 7-6 (9-7), 6-2.

Several matches were left unfinished, including a competitive contest between Valentin Greco and nationally ranked Filipe Krohn at No. 1 singles. Greco took the first set in a tiebreak before the match was halted. Marti Cerda Castillo was also engaged in a battle at No. 2 singles after splitting the first two sets.

Despite the loss, Delta State concludes its season with 11 wins, showing improvement from last year and earning another postseason appearance, according to sources.
