Delta State Lady Statesmen Tennis Falls to West Florida in GSC Quarterfinals

The Delta State University Lady Statesmen tennis team’s season concluded Thursday with a 4-1 defeat against No. 3 West Florida in the Gulf South Conference Women’s Tennis Championship quarterfinals at the Tuscaloosa Tennis Center.

Delta State finished the year with an 11-9 record after earning a spot in the conference tournament and competing against one of the league’s top programs in the opening round.

West Florida secured the doubles point by winning at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles. At No. 1, Amelia Ciesielczyk and Yasmina Mayer lost to Sandra Recuenco and Carlota Verdu, 6-1. Lena Kuehn and Angie Moreno dropped a 6-3 decision at No. 3 doubles, while the No. 2 doubles match featuring Trinity Ly and Anastasi Iakovlieva was left unfinished.

In singles play, Yasmina Mayer earned the Lady Statesmen’s lone point with a retirement victory over Recuenco at No. 2 after splitting the opening sets. West Florida claimed the remaining points at Nos. 4, 5, and 6 singles. Anastasiia Iakovlieva lost 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4, Lena Kuehn was defeated 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5, and Angie Moreno fell 6-0, 6-4 at No. 6.

Two singles matches were unfinished when the match was decided. Ciesielczyk was trailing 6-4, 2-4 at No. 1, and Ly was competing at No. 3 when play was halted. The Lady Statesmen’s postseason run is their second consecutive appearance, and they improved their overall win total from the previous season.
