The Delta State University men’s tennis team staged a dramatic comeback Monday afternoon, defeating No. 16 West Alabama 4-3 at Cleveland Country Club. The Statesmen (11-9, 3-5 Gulf South Conference) lost the doubles point and the first two singles matches before winning four straight singles matches to secure the victory.
West Alabama took an early 1-0 lead by winning two of three doubles courts. Delta State’s only doubles win came at No. 3, where Juan Diego Alzate and Joaquin Jarochevsky defeated their opponents 6-1.
In singles play, the Tigers pushed their lead to 3-0 with straight-set victories at No. 1 and No. 2. The Statesmen responded with a series of wins, beginning with Simon Ojeda, who beat his opponent 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5. Valentino Millimaci then secured a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 6 to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The comeback gained momentum as Alzate fought back from a set down to win in three sets at No. 3, including a second-set tiebreak. Alejandro Bravo sealed the upset with a three-set win at No. 4, 7-5, 1-6, 6-2, clinching the match for Delta State.
The four consecutive singles victories marked one of the team’s most impressive wins of the season, knocking off a ranked Gulf South Conference opponent in a dramatic fashion. Delta State is scheduled to compete next week in the Gulf South Conference Championship Tournament starting April 23 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
