Delta State Lady Statesmen Softball Hosts No. 7 West Florida in GSC Series
The Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team will host the No. 7 West Florida Argonauts this weekend in a Gulf South Conference series. The teams will play a double-header Friday starting at 3 p.m., with a single game scheduled for Saturday at noon at University Field, according to school officials.
Delta State enters the series with a 3-11 overall record and a 1-2 mark in conference play. The Lady Statesmen are looking to build on an 8-6 victory last Saturday against Union, their first win in GSC play after dropping two close games against undefeated Blue Mountain Christian University earlier this week.
Calli McConnell leads the team with a .486 batting average. She has hit two doubles, one triple, and two home runs, driving in 12 runs this season. Kyleigh Wheaton has also been a key contributor at the plate, batting .442 with five home runs and 17 RBIs. Maeve Lavoy has been the team’s primary pitcher, posting a 5.35 ERA over 17 innings with 13 strikeouts.
West Florida enters the weekend ranked seventh in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll. The Argonauts are 14-2 overall and 3-0 in conference after sweeping Christian Brothers last weekend. Hannah Harper leads UWF with a .456 batting average, including three doubles, three triples, and two home runs, while driving in 21 RBIs. Nicole Mergen has added power with six home runs and 18 RBIs.
In the circle, Haley Guffey has pitched 57.1 innings with a 2.32 ERA and 36 strikeouts, helping UWF maintain its top-ranked status in the conference.
