Delta State Football Adds Three Coaches to Staff

Delta State University head football coach David Dean has announced the addition of three new members to the Statesmen coaching staff. The hires aim to strengthen key areas on both sides of the ball before the season begins.

Tripp Thomas joins as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. He previously served as defensive coordinator at Colorado School of Mines, leading a unit that ranked among the best nationally. Mines’ defense recorded 71 sacks, led NCAA Division II in turnovers gained with 33, and ranked fifth in defensive touchdowns with five. Thomas also oversaw all aspects of defense, including game planning and player development.

Roshmel Young is the new assistant coach for wide receivers. He brings experience from Eastern Kentucky University, where he contributed to a top-ranked passing offense. Dean credited Young’s leadership and familiarity, noting their past connection and Young’s success as a player and coach. Young has also coached at high school and Division I levels, and he played a key role in EKU’s 2022 national third-ranked passing attack.

Clay Isbell joins as assistant coach for special teams and running backs. He has a background in special teams and running backs coaching, most recently at Coastal Carolina, where he contributed to a top Sun Belt special teams unit. He also has experience at Mars Hill, Wisconsin-Whitewater, Tusculum, and Chattanooga. Dean highlighted Isbell’s understanding of Division II athletes and his success as a special teams coach.

The trio will begin working with the team immediately as preparations continue for the upcoming season. For more information, visit GoStatesmen.com.
